AGM (Absorbable Glass Mat), The AGM battery has a positive and negative plate separated by a glass mat, The acid which is a gel, is absorbed in the glass mat, making it non spillable. Sometimes they are mistaken for Gel batteries. The most advanced AGM Battery in today's market is the OPTIMA BATTERY Optima Batteries contain spirally wound cells, as opposed to traditional flat plate batteries . The spiral cell design allows the use of lead in its purest form, as each cell has spirally wound plates separated by a glass mat, then pressed into tubes restricting the need for plate strengtheners. As alloys are used for strengtheners in flat plate batteries, their shelf life is limited, sometimes as low as three months. An Optima Battery however with pure lead has a shelf life of at least 12 months, up to 18 months depending on temperature. Spirally wound cells allows the Optima Battery to be true Deep cycle and have extraordinary High Start power, As well as being 15 times more resilient to vibration. As an Optima Battery absorbs it's own gases, there is no emitting of gas under normal charging conditions. Being Non hazardous Optima Batteries have clearance to be shipped by air.
